Please note that most restaurants are closed on Sundays and Mondays, so call ahead to check.

La Cave aux Fioles Romantic medieval building with a lovely décor (read bricks and beams, red upholstery and antique furniture). There is also an inner courtyard and jazz bar. The menu is strong on meat and Flemish specialities. Booking essential.

L’Ecume des Mers Restaurant specialising in seafood and fish. The monkfish with cream and tarragon cream is excellent, and so is the aioli cod. Service can be a bit hit and miss. Good for business meetings, though, as there are several rooms for private dining.

La Table du Siam This Thai restaurant in the Vieux Lille has been serving excellent Thai food at reasonable prices for the past 10 years. There is a branch in the city centre too.

Estaminet T Rijsel Cosy rustic Flemish pub, which looks as if it hasn’t changed in centuries. Great atmosphere, which explains why the place is always packed. Try the poulet au maroilles (roast chicken smothered in a local cheese), the house speciality. Closed Sunday.

Crêperie Beaurepaire One of several good crêperies in Lille, this one has the added advantage of having a pleasant courtyard ideal in summer. Good selection of savoury and sweet galettes and crepes, and excellent Breton cider served in traditional ‘bolée’ (cup).

Paul This bakery, which has been run by the same family since 1889, still bakes its own bread on the premises every morning. Stop by for delicious sandwiches, Viennese pastries, or some of the best fruit tarts in town. Eat in or take away.
