Getting There By Rail
Philippine National Railways (tel: (02) 287 3062 or 365 4716; website: www.phr.gov.ph) is the national rail service provider. Service is basic, although the seats are surprisingly comfortable and some coaches are air-conditioned. Manila’s main station is Tutuban station, Claro M Recto Avenue, Tutuban (tel: (02) 287 3062). Facilities are limited, however, the adjacent Tutuban Mall has banks and other facilities.
Rail services: The rail system connects Manila with the city of Legaspi on the Bicol Peninsula in southern Luzon (journey time – 12 hours) and extends north to San Fernando in La Union Province. This is essentially the country’s only rail line (although one is planned for the island of Mindanao) a fact that reveals much about Philippine infrastructure.
Transport to the city: Transport to and from the station is basic, with no Metrorail connection. Taxis, buses and jeepneys are available at the railway station.
