Hotels

Introduction
A hotel tax of C$2, as well as GST (goods and services tax) of 7% and TVQ (Québec sales tax) of 7.5%, is added to all hotel bills in Montreal. The GST portion can be reclaimed – see Shopping for details.

The hotels below have been classed into four different pricing categories:
$ (up to C$125)
$$ (C$125 to C$175)
$$$ (C$175 to C$225)
$$$$ (over C$225)

These are based on the lowest standard rates for a double room, excluding taxes and excluding breakfast, unless otherwise specified.

Business

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth
Located right downtown atop the main train station and linked to the shopping malls via the Underground City, this hotel is as central as it gets. The modernist exterior hides 1,039 comfortable rooms and suites, as well as a health club with indoor pool, the renowned Beaver Club restaurant, a business centre and 50,000 square feet of meeting space. It has hosted royalty and John and Yoko’s bed-in, where they recorded Give Peace a Chance.

InterContinental Montreal
Opposite the Palais des Congrès convention centre and perched on the edge of Old Montreal, the InterContinental is well situated for business and sightseeing and is linked to a stunning atrium. Its 357 rooms and suites are well-appointed and the turret suites offer great wraparound views. The largest of the 18 meeting rooms accommodates 700 guests reception-style, while three of the smallest are in the original stone vaults of the historic Nordheimer building. For relaxation, there’s a fitness centre and rooftop lap pool.

Luxury

Hôtel Gault
The stone exterior of a 19th-century warehouse gives little clue of the sleek minimalism within this stylish Old Montreal hotel. Funky, colourful chairs add a light touch to the lobby, while Arne Jacobsen fixtures, heated bathroom floors, custom-made linens and a DVD library are some of the goodies in the individually designed loft-style rooms. Rates include breakfast.

Ritz-Carlton
The dapper doormen and elegant Beaux-Arts façade on this boutique lined strip of rue Sherbrooke hint at old money – and the old money’s been on the Ritz since the early 20th century. The 181 rooms and 47 suites are elegantly decorated with antiques and come with all the frills one would expect of a top hotel.

Bonaparte
In the heart of Old Montreal, this romantic inn lies around the corner from Notre-Dame Basilica – the pricier rooms overlook the church’s private gardens. All 30 rooms are non-smoking. Rates include a continental breakfast in the room or a full breakfast in the elegant, gastronomic restaurant.

This sleek downtown address is part of a small local chain of boutique hotels and the first of its kind in Montreal. The trendy décor is still up-to-date, with dark woods contrasting with earth-tone fabrics in the 101 loft-like rooms, with designer accessories balancing out the minimalist effect. Perks like fresh fruit, Aveda toiletries, bathrobes and down duvets and pillows make it a stylish home-away-from-home. Other facilities include an exercise room and a meeting room accommodating 18 to 40 people. The rate includes continental breakfast.
