Fallas, Mar, one of Spain’s most spectacular firework celebrations, culminating in giant figures, expertly created from wood and papier-maché, meeting a fiery end (website: www.fallas.com)
Moros y Cristianos (Moors and Christians), Apr, the most spectacular processions and ‘battles’ take place in Alcoi, 11km (7 miles) south of Valencia, but the city also stages its own noisy celebrations
La Tomatina, last Wed in Aug, giant tomato fight held in the village of Buñol, 40km (24 miles) west of Valencia
Fiesta de San Juan, Jun, bonfires and fireworks celebrate the solstice
Feria de Julio, throughout Jul, the highlights are the ‘battle of the flowers’ (last Sunday), the International Musical Band Competition (first fortnight), Feria de San Jaime bullfights (second and third weeks) and the performing arts from classical ballet, to rock bands to zarzuela (Spanish light opera)
