Sightseeing
Southeast Cyprus provides a complete contrast to the rest of the country. The one-time sleepy little town of Larnaca has been brought to life by the growth in tourism, and new hotels and apartment blocks have been built to keep pace with the town’s growing popularity as a winter resort. The seafront is fringed by palm trees, cafés and tavernas. Places of interest include: Agia Faneromeni Church, dating from the eighth century BC and built over a rock cave; Larnaca Fort, the Archaeological District Museum; the Pierides Museum (another archaeological museum) and the ruins of the ancient city of Kition. To the east, Larnaca Bay has a public bathing beach with facilities comparable to those of Limassol, and several newly-built hotels.

Shopping
Cypriot purchases include handmade lace, jewellery, woven curtains and tablecloths, silks, basket work, pottery, silverware and leather goods. Silver spoons and forks are a traditional symbol of Cypriot hospitality. Other products include the simple baskets which have been made on the island for years, leather goods and pottery. The local wines and brandy also make good purchases.

Eating Out
Dishes include kebabs (pieces of lamb or other meat skewered and roasted over a charcoal fire), dolmades (vine leaves stuffed with minced meat and rice) and tava (a tasty stew of meat, herbs and onions). One of the best ways to enjoy Cypriot food is by ordering mezze (snacks), a large selection of a number of different local dishes. Fresh fruit is plentiful and cheap, and very sweet desserts, such as baklava, are widely available.
