Sightseeing The cosmopolitan city of Boston is regarded as the most ‘European’ of all America’s cities and harbours a rich heritage. The Freedom Trail consists of a four-kilometre (2.5-mile) walking tour of historic Boston and Charlestown, encompassing 16 sites and structures of historical significance to both the city and the nation. Highlights include the USS Constitution, Paul Revere House and the golden-domed State House, situated in the charming Beacon Hill district of the city. Other popular attractions are the Boston Tea Party Museum, located on a replica of one of the original East India Company tea clippers and Harvard University, located across the Charles River in the elegant town of Cambridge. Shopping Faneuil Hall Quincy Marketplace, in central Boston, was originally built in 1826 as a meat and greengrocery hall and now contains over 100 shops, as well as cafés and restaurants. Newbury Street, which runs from Boston Common to Massachusetts Avenue, is lined with expensive and designer shops, art galleries, book and antique shops and cafés. Cambridge has many interesting bookshops, as well as a shop specialising in Harvard memorabilia. Eating Out Seafood is a speciality throughout Massachusetts, including local lobster, scallops, scrod and delicious clam chowder.
