Sightseeing
Port Canaveral is America’s second busiest cruise passenger port. The main attraction here is Cape Canaveral in the Titusville area – home of the US Space Program. All of NASA’s shuttle flights take off from the Kennedy Space Center. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex runs continuous tours of the complex where visitors see the actual launchpads and astronaut training centres as well as museums and exhibits. The complex also has an IMAX theatre. The Astronauts’ Hall of Fame, a few kilometres from the Kennedy Space Center offers a hands-on, self-guided tour through the early days of space exploration, focusing on the Mercury 7 and Gemini astronauts. The Kennedy Space Center’s location on Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, home to bald eagles, alligators, otters and sea turtles, means that visitors can also enjoy wildlife walks or drives and learn about the animals that inhabit the area.
Shopping
Visitors to Florida can buy a vast range of goods, both in historic Cocoa Village, near Port Canaveral, which has many speciality shops, or in the many shopping malls for which the USA is famous. Merritt Square Mall is one of the Space Coast’s main shopping malls and features 95 stores.
Eating Out
As in the rest of Florida – fresh seafood, steaks and Caribbean cuisine, including dishes flavoured with tropical fruits such as banana, mango and papaya. Port Canaveral has a vast range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.
