Description The Welsh Slate Museum in the Padarn Country Park at Llanberis details the history of the slate industry in Wales which was vitally important to the local economy. The mines were at their peak during the industrial revolution when vast quantities of slate was needed to roof the new buildings that were springing up around the country. The museum itself is located in Victorian workshops at the site of the vast Dinorwig Quarry with the impressive Elidir Mountain in the background. Four quarrymen’s houses were saved from demolition in Blaenau Ffestiniog and faithfully re-erected at the site and furnished to show four different periods in Welsh history. There’s also the largest working water wheel in mainland Britain and visitors can tour the old workshops and foundry. The museum is set in beautiful surroundings on the shores of Llyn Padarn at the terminus of the Llanberis Lake Railway.
