Grand Ole Opry Description Grand Ole Opry is the world’s longest running live radio show, and an American icon. It was first broadcast as a weekly barn dance show on November 28 1925, at a time when the radio was fast growing in popularity. In the early days, the show followed a classical music program, and radio announcer George D Hay joked that the Grand Opera that listeners had just heard would be followed by performances of the ‘Grand Ole Opry’ – Hay adopted this impromptu name and it stuck. Within a few years the show became so popular that thousands of fans flocked to see it performed live. After a succession of venues, it finally settled in the specially designed 4400 seat Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville in 1974, from where it has been broadcast ever since.
