Watersports
The Azores is a well-known destination for whale and dolphin watching with over 25 species currently identified in the area. The best time to spot them is from June to September when they feed off the waters around the islands of Faial, Pico and São Jorge. The abundant marine life around the Azores’ nine islands offers excellent diving and dive centres can be found on a number of islands, particularly Faial and São Miguel. Surfing has recently become popular on Santa Maria and São Miguel islands while sailing clubs, which can be found on all islands (except Corvo), also provide assistance to windsurfing enthusiasts.
Fishing
The Azores is an internationally renowned destination for deep-sea fishing and chartered boats are available at many coastal resorts, particularly on Faial and São Miguel where tourist facilities are more developed. Freshwater fishing is only allowed in the lakes of the islands of Flores and São Miguel with a licence.
Golf
There are three 18-hole golf courses in the Azores. Two of them (Furnas and Batalha) are on São Miguel island; the third is on Terceira. The mild climate allows playing all year round.
Flora and fauna
The Azores attract many nature and plant lovers. The lush islands are home to over 50 native plants as well as imported ones, such as the Japanese criptomera or the acacia tree. The flowering hydrangeas and azaleas are particularly widespread. The many species of birds make it an ideal destination for birdwatching. For information on special tours and walks, contact the ICEP tourist office (see Contact Addresses section).
Volcanoes
The volcanic origins of the archipelago provide interesting material for amateur and professional speleologists as there are numerous craters and other volcanic phenomena to explore. Caving enthusiasts can explore the caves and tunnels of Algar do Carvão on Terceira island.
Other
The Azores’ rocky landscapes are ideal for parasailing and paragliding, and operators can be found on Faial, Santa Maria, São Miguel and Terceira.
