Currency Guyanese Dollar (G$) = 100 cents. Notes are in denominations of G$1000, 500, 100 and 20. Coins are in denominations of G$10, 5 and 1. US Dollars are widely accepted throughout Guyana. Currency exchange Banks offer exchange facilities. Bureaux de change offer free conversion of currencies. Credit & debit cards American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa enjoy limited acceptance (eg at certain hotels and shops). Check with your credit or debit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available. Travellers cheques Accepted but not recommended for those who may wish to change money in a hurry. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in US Dollars. Currency restrictions The import and export of local currency is limited to G$200. The import of foreign currency is unlimited, provided declared in writing on arrival. The export of foreign currency is limited to the amount imported and declared.
