Travel - International

Air
International airports: Detroit Metro (DTW) (website: www.metroairport.com) is 32km (20 miles) west of the city centre. The airport is the USA’s 10th busiest for total passenger numbers (2002) and also receives a sizeable share of international arrivals (2.7 million in 2003). Metropolitan shuttles and taxis are available to downtown areas; car hire is also available.

Approximate flight times
From Detroit to London is seven hours 30 minutes, to Los Angeles is five hours 10 minutes, to Miami is two hours 50 minutes and to New York City is one hour 40 minutes.

Rail
Detroit is on the Amtrak ‘Michigan Services’ Chicago–Toronto line, which runs from Chicago to Toronto, stopping at a number of Michigan locations, including Jackson, Detroit, Royal Oak and Birmingham (tel: (800) 872 7245 (toll-free); website: www.amtrak.com); see the Illinois section for approximate travel times. The station is located at 11 West Baltimore Avenue; car hire is available.

Road
Greyhound (tel: (800) 229 9424 (toll-free); website: www.greyhound.com) buses are most frequent in the south; only a few buses serve the Upper Peninsula.
Approximate driving times: From Detroit to Cleveland is three hours, to Chicago is five hours, to Cincinnati is five hours, to Indianapolis is five hours, to Toronto is five hours, to Buffalo is six hours, to New York City is 13 hours, to Dallas is 24 hours, to Miami is 27 hours, to Los Angeles is 49 hours and to Seattle is 49 hours. All times are based on non-stop driving at or below the applicable speed limits.


Approximate bus travel times
From Detroit to Cleveland is four hours, to Cincinnati is five hours 30 minutes, to Chicago is six hours, to Toronto is six hours, to Indianapolis is eight hours, to Duluth is 19 hours 15 minutes and to Los Angeles is 32 hours.

Urban
Most larger communities have bus and taxi services. Detroit also has a city-centre rapid rail system, the People Mover, which connects 13 stations in downtown Detroit. D-DOT and SMART buses serve the city centre and suburbs respectively.
