Air
New Caledonia’s national airline is Aircalin (Air Calédonie International) (SB). Other airlines serving New Caledonia include Air New Zealand, KLM and Qantas. The Oceania Pass is available in Economy class on the Aircalin network within the Southwest Pacific, but is limited to non-residents, and must be purchased prior to departure (for details and conditions, see website: www.aircalin.nc). Air travel is by far the easiest and most rapid means of transport to New Caledonia.
Approximate flight times
From Nouméa to London is 26 hours, including stopovers, but this may increase to 30 hours, depending on the day of travel; to Los Angeles is 18 hours (via Tahiti); to Sydney is two hours 30 minutes.
International airports
Nouméa (NOU) (La Tontouta), 50km (31 miles) from the city (travel time – 45 minutes). Airport facilities include post office, bureau de change, duty-free shops (available for scheduled flights), bar, restaurant and car hire (Avis, Budget, Discount Location, Hertz, JNJ and Visa). Taxi and coach services are available to the city. It is advisable to book transfers before arrival in New Caledonia.
