Travel - International Travel Warning All travel to the Aïr Massif, Ténére and Kaouar regions is advised against due to recent clashes between the Nigerien security forces and armed groups. It is possible to travel north from Agadez as far as the tree of Ténére and south as far as the Termit Massif. All travel to the Azawagh area, particularly between Malian and Algerian borders and the Nigerien towns of Tahoua and Ingall, and to the east of Aïr Massif and the area north of Iferouane up to the Algerian border, is advised against. Border areas are generally insecure and it is best to avoid a 200km-deep zone along borders with Mali, Algeria, Libya and Chad. All but essential travel is advised on the Agadez-Arlit road. Terrorists are active in countries neighbouring Niger. Air Most international flights are operated by Air Afrique (RK). Other airlines serving Niger include Air Algerie, Air France, Royal Air Maroc and Sudan Airways. (There are no direct flights to Niger from the UK.) Approximate flight times From London to Niamey is six hours, excluding stopover time in Paris. International airports Niamey (NIM), 12km (7.5 miles) southeast of the city (travel time – 10 minutes). Airport facilities include bars, shops, post office, currency exchange and car hire. Taxi services are available to the city. Hotels have their own vehicles and provide free transport for their clients between the hotel and the airport. Departure tax None. Road There are main roads from Kano (Nigeria) to Zinder, and from Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. The principal trans-Sahara desert track runs from Algiers to Asamakka and Arlit, with a paved road to Agadez. Desert driving can be difficult, marker beacons may not always be visible, and petrol is not always available. Bus: Services operate from Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali. |
