Watersports
These predominate, and for many visitors will form the central part of the holiday. Snorkelling, windsurfing and water-skiing are all available with facilities and tuition as necessary, but the island is perhaps becoming best-known as a centre for scuba-diving. Many wrecks lie on the black sand amid coral reefs and near the submerged old port just off Oranjestad, and these have long attracted a staggering variety of marine life. The fish have been joined by increasing numbers of expert divers, drawn by a unique combination of first-rate facilities, warm and clear water and coral, and – onshore – comfortable hotels and excellent cuisine. Dive centres on St Eustatius offer complete packages (PADI), resort courses, lessons, equipment hire and snorkel tours.
