Travel - International Note There are very high crime rates in El Salvador. Visitors who arrange to be met at the airport and accompanied during their trip encounter few problems. Great care must be taken if travelling alone or at night. Air El Salvador’s national airline is Taca International Airlines (TA) (website: www.taca.com). American Airlines operates daily flights from London Heathrow to El Salvador via Miami and via Washington. United Airlines operates flights from London Heathrow to El Salvador via Washington. Other airlines include Air France, Continental, COPA, Delta, Iberia and Northwest Airlines. Approximate flight times From San Salvador to London, excluding stopover time in USA (usually overnight), is 10 hours 20 minutes. International airports San Salvador (SAL) (El Salvador International) is 62km (38 miles) from the city. Coaches to the city operate every 30 minutes (travel time – 40 minutes). Taxis to the city are also available. Airport facilities include a restaurant, duty-free shops, car hire, disabled facilities, pharmacy, bank/bureau de change, tourist information and left luggage. Departure tax US$22 (including a US$2.65 Immigration Tax), payable in US Dollars or Colóns. Children under two years are exempt, but do need to pay the Immigration Tax. Sea The principal ports are Acajutla, La Unión and La Libertad on the Pacific coast. Rail There are currently no rail links to Guatemala. Contact the Embassy for passage details. Road There are frequent buses from San Salvador to Guatemala City and Tegucigalpa. If arriving at the border during off-duty hours (from Mon-Fri 1200-1400, 1800-0800 and Saturday from 1200 to Monday 0800), a duty must be paid. |
