Social Profile

Food & Drink
There are several restaurants in the capital, augmented by a considerable number of more informal eating establishments patronised by the inhabitants. Reservations are nearly always required, even at the higher profile restaurants, not because of lack of space but to allow the proprietor to obtain sufficient food in advance. Grilled fish and chicken, fried fish and tropical fruit are popular. Most dishes are highly spiced.

Special Events
Popular theatre has an important place in daily life and each island has its own form of traditional dance and mime. The Auto de Floripes (in São Tomé) and the Tchiloli (in Príncipe) date back to the 16th century and relate the Tragedy of the Marquis of Mantua and the Emperor Charlemagne. The roles are passed on from father to son while women usually remain spectators. There are also a number of religious processions dedicated to Catholic saints, and all the main Christian holidays are celebrated. For further information, contact the Embassy in Brussels (see Contact Addresses section).

Social Conventions
The Portuguese influence is very strong. People are friendly and courteous. Every greeting is accompanied by a handshake. Normal social courtesies should be observed. Alcohol is available and smoking is acceptable. Photography: Visitors wishing to photograph local people should ask permission first. Tipping: Not always welcomed.
