Travel - International

It should be recognised that burgulary, armed robbery and violent crimes occur with some frequency in Paramaribo and outlying areas. However, most visits to Surinam are trouble-free.

Air
The national airline is Surinam Airways (PY) (website: www.slm.firm.fr). BWIA West Indies Airways and KLM also fly to Surinam. There are direct flights from Amsterdam three to seven times a week.

Approximate flight times
From Paramaribo to London is 10 hours, excluding stopover time in Amsterdam or Miami, which may involve an overnight stay, owing to a lack of connecting flights.

International airports
Johan Adolf Pengel (PBM) (Paramaribo) is 45km (28 miles) south of the city. A coach meets all arrivals. There are also buses or taxis to the city (travel time – 45 minutes). Airport facilities include duty-free shop, bank, bar/restaurant and post office.

Departure tax
USD35. Transit passengers and children under two years of age are exempt.

Sea
The main international port is Paramaribo. Surinam Shipping Line sails from Mexico and New Orleans monthly. There are coastal services between ports and services to Germany and The Netherlands. The Royal Netherlands Steamship Company provides a service from Amsterdam to Surinam with limited passenger accommodation. There are regular car ferry services across the Surinam River and Marowijne River from Albina to St Laurent de Maroni (French Guiana), from Southdrain (Surinam) to Moleson Creek (Guyana), and across the Corantijn River from Nieuw Nickerie to Springlands (Guyana).

Road
The coastal road from Paramaribo leads to the borders of French Guiana and Guyana.
